Inside the Ultrafast Laser Lab at TU Wien

On 24 May 2025, Leng Yuxin, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with Lou Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Industrial Convergence and Innovation Center, visited the Ultrashort-Pulse Ultrafast Laser Group at the Institute of Photonics, TU Wien, for a lively exchange with local young Chinese scholars and PASCO members. The visit aimed to advance Sino-Austrian scientific and technological cooperation, encourage talent mobility, and deepen collaboration between the two sides in cutting-edge technology.
Professor Andrius Baltuška, head of the ultrafast laser group, warmly welcomed the delegation, personally leading the tour of the laboratory and explaining the group’s core research directions alongside its experimental facilities. The group commands world-leading ultrashort-pulse laser technology and a deep research heritage — it is also where Ferenc Krausz, 2023 Nobel Laureate in Physics, carried out his pioneering work in attosecond physics.
During the exchange, Deputy Director Leng gave a comprehensive overview of SIOM’s research landscape and development directions, stressing that the institute places great importance on attracting top global talent and sincerely welcomes outstanding scholars and students committed to research to join and build the future together. Deputy Director Lou, speaking from the perspective of industrial synergy and applied translation, shared the center’s practical experience in integrating fundamental research with high-end manufacturing. Local young scholars and PASCO members taking part included Li Qian, Sui Xudong, Wang Chunlei, Jiang Dafa, Liu Tingting, Li Huizi and Hu Hongtao, among others.
The visit not only strengthened ties between Chinese research institutions and Austrian universities, but also laid a solid foundation for future cooperation and exchange.
